Why isn't Cantonese on Duolingo?

A lot of people start here, hit a wall, and wonder why. Here's the reason, and the way around it.

Duolingo doesn't offer Cantonese. It focuses on higher-demand languages and treats “Chinese” as Mandarin. Despite around 85 million speakers, Cantonese is under-resourced, which is why learners need a dedicated app or course.

The underserved-language reality

Cantonese has roughly 85 million speakers, more than Italian, Korean or Thai, yet a tiny fraction of their learning infrastructure. There's no single standardized exam, no universal textbook series, and big platforms tend to treat “Chinese” as Mandarin. The result: Cantonese gets left off Duolingo, Babbel and most mainstream apps.

What to use instead

Because no single tool has dominated, the usual advice is to combine resources. What actually moves you forward is a structured, Hong Kong-specific course that doesn't skip tones, supported by real listening and speaking practice.

Why we built Hou²Hou²

We wanted one app that treats Hong Kong Cantonese as a first-class language: situation-led lessons, all six tones, native-speaker review, and full offline use. More about why →

Does Duolingo have Cantonese?

No. Duolingo offers Mandarin Chinese but not Cantonese. For Cantonese you need a dedicated app or course.

Why is there so little Cantonese material?

Cantonese has no standardized proficiency exam and is often lumped in with 'Chinese' (meaning Mandarin), so it's been under-served despite tens of millions of speakers.

What should I use instead?

A Hong Kong-specific course that takes tones seriously, plus listening practice and, ideally, a tutor for speaking. Hou²Hou² is built to be that core course.

Will Duolingo add Cantonese?

There's no sign of it. Rather than wait, learners are better served by apps focused on Cantonese.
