About

Two good things, said twice.

Hou²Hou² is a Cantonese learning app for people who are moving to — or just visiting — Hong Kong, and want to speak the language the city actually runs on.

The name

好好hou2 hou2 — is everyday Hong Kong reassurance: “good, good,” “all good.” You'll hear it inside 好好食 (hou2 hou2 sik6, “really delicious”), the highest compliment you can pay a bowl of wonton noodles. It's warm, it's local, and it's the feeling we want learning Cantonese to have.

The mark

Our symbol is (sing1) — “sound, voice, tone.” We chose it because tone is the heart of Cantonese. Get the tones, and the rest follows. The three marks beneath it are pitch lines: the language, drawn.

Why we built it

Cantonese is spoken by around 85 million people, yet it's left off Duolingo, Babbel, and most major platforms. The advice you usually get is to stitch three apps together. We wanted one app that takes Hong Kong Cantonese seriously — situation-led, honest about tones, reviewed by a native speaker, and respectful of your privacy.

How it's made

The course is built around real Hong Kong situations and reviewed by a Hong Kong-born linguist so the phrasing rings true — including the lazy sounds (懶音) you'll meet in real conversations. The app keeps your data on your device and out of our hands; there are no Hou²Hou² servers collecting your learning history.
